In January, the South Boston Waterfront Transportation Plan was released. This was an eighteen month effort to develop a blueprint for transportation system improvements, over a 20 year planning horizon, for one of the fastest growing areas in the Commonwealth. The Plan was the result of an unprecedented effort of a consortium of agencies -- Massport, MassDOT, the Convention Center, and the City of Boston – with project management services provided by ABC.

Under the leadership of Tom Tinlin, Acting Highway Administrator, the agencies continue to work together to implement short-term initiatives identified in the Plan. These important new initiatives include:
- Efforts to consolidate the network of employer-provided shuttles
- Changes to the I-93 entrance and exit traffic flows at Purchase Street to improve throughput
- Implementation of a pilot expand access to the South Boston Bypass Road and the northbound 93 HOV lane to the Ted Williams Tunnel
- New Hubway stations in the Waterfront
- New parking technology
- Implementation of a pilot program of pedestrian wayfinding signs
To advance the plan’s mid and long-term recommendations, including a substantial investment in improved transit service, focused advocacy will be required from the business community. Over 17 million square feet of development is still forecast, along with a 67% increase in trips. ABC looks forward to continuing to advocate for long-term improvements to transportation in the South Boston Waterfront even as we celebrate our early successes.
